Mariachi Program at Thomas Jefferson High School

The Mariachi Program at Thomas Jefferson High School embodies the mission of Musical Dreams Foundation by delivering equitable access to music education while fostering cultural pride and creative expression. With the support of donated instruments and resources, the program provides students a transformative opportunity to explore mariachi music, develop leadership skills, and connect with their heritage.

Meeting twice weekly, the Mariachi Program welcomes students of all skill levels to learn and perform using traditional mariachi instruments such as the trumpet, violin, guitarrón, guitar, and voice. Participants receive instruction in reading standard musical notation, playing as an ensemble, and mastering the stylistic nuances of mariachi music. Unlike conventional programs led entirely by instructors, the Mariachi Program is uniquely student-run, offering members the chance to take ownership of the ensemble’s direction.

Key leadership roles—including President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer—allow students to actively shape the program’s activities and future. These student leaders oversee responsibilities such as organizing rehearsals, selecting repertoire, managing resources, and engaging with the broader school community. This structure not only cultivates musical talent but also builds confidence, teamwork, and organizational skills. It empowers students to take pride in their achievements and instills a sense of agency in their educational journey.

The program is a cultural cornerstone, connecting students with their heritage while fostering community pride. Rehearsals are often bilingual, offering a space for students to sing in Spanish and share the cultural significance of mariachi music with peers and even instructors who are eager to learn from them. By engaging in this meaningful exchange, students deepen their appreciation for their roots while celebrating the universal joy of music.

Performances at school district festivals, adjudicated events, and local venues showcase the students’ talent and hard work. The program also collaborates with a feeder middle school mariachi program, sharing resources and planning a joint spring concert to unite the community in celebration of music and culture. Outreach efforts, including social media campaigns, morning announcements, posters, and live lunchtime performances, ensure the program remains visible and accessible to all interested students.

By aligning with Musical Dreams Foundation’s mission to provide sustainable, inclusive music programs, the Mariachi Program transforms lives. The Foundation’s support—through donated new and gently used instruments—enables students to explore their musical potential, connect with their culture, and develop invaluable life skills. Together, we are creating a future where every child has access to the transformative power of music, empowering them to take ownership of their creativity, build leadership abilities, and inspire their communities.
